Windows reliability: could do better...

The specialized site “Les Numériques” summarizes a report published by the company Omnissa on the reliability of Windows compared to macOS. The results are clear-cut:

  • Windows users need to restart their PC 3.1 times more often than Mac users

  • Windows users experience 2.2 times more application crashes than Mac users.

  • Windows users experience 7.5 times more application freezes than Mac users.

One of the main reasons for this poor result for Windows (or excellent result for macOS) is that Macs benefit from better integration between hardware and operating system, both of which are produced by the same company. In contrast, on PCs, the system is produced by Microsoft and the hardware by third-party manufacturers, which does not always facilitate harmonious development. Moreover, Microsoft is not the champion of product reliability...

The Mac has a reputation for being more expensive than its Windows competitors, which is partly true (Mac computers are generally in the middle or high end of the market). But if you calculate the total cost of ownership (TCO) (purchase cost + operating costs), the Mac is quite competitive thanks to its greater reliability and longer lifespan (on average, 11.5% of Macs are used for more than 6 years, compared to only 1.8% of PCs). Not to mention that the resale value of a Mac is higher than that of a PC.

It should be noted that a few years ago, the IBM company published a study showing that to manage a fleet of 200,000 Macs, seven employees were sufficient, whereas 20 were needed to manage an equivalent fleet of PCs. Here again, the higher initial cost of purchasing the hardware is largely offset by lower operating costs.

A company that is not required to use a specific software available only under Windows therefore has every interest in examining Apple’s offer to build its computer park.

For your information, Office Maker software works in both environments and is therefore not an obstacle for a platform change.
